Google Drive, it’s another free service that Google is providing. This time it’s cloud storage. So, if you want 5 free GB of storage that is controlled by Google, then you have that option now. You will also be able to upgrade to 16 TB of space for £799.84 a month. Once we know a lot more about the service, we will update you. Right now, this is what we know about Google Drive. The obvious move behind this would probably be Google taking on the big named cloud storage providers. Why? Ad money, the free storage will likely be funded by advertising just as their free Gmail service. Drive has been a rumor for over five years now and to see it finally come about into reality is very interesting.

Product Philosophy:

The Google philosophy would seemingly be about global domination through web apps and phones, but on the most part they are about providing quality products. This world domination would also appear to include bundling all of your computer services with Google. You can rely on them for email, blogging, searching and now cloud storage. We’ve never been a fan of the putting all of your eggs in one basket philosophy. The good news about Google getting into the cloud business is that they may force all other cloud companies to lower their pricing. That may be an impressive feat as many of those cloud storage companies are already offering unlimited storage for pennies a day. Google’s pricing plan is obviously designed to hurt existing cloud companies by severely undercutting them. However, no matter how much money Google has, they may not be able to keep the scheduled low pricing for very long. It would also be advisable to keep an eye on Google’s terms and conditions regarding what you store on their servers and what their rights to access it are.

Security:

Google is super proud of their security, so you can expect the best of the best. Google always has to be on top of its game for security because they are such a giant target for hackers. Just makes sense.

Storage:

You get the 5GB for free, and you can increment to 25GB, 100GB and then 1TB up to 16.

Ease Of Use:

It looks easy to use. One thing that we worry about is if Google goes down, then all of our files, apps, phones and more will go with it. Google services are great, but there’s also a lot to be said for spreading out your assets so they can’t be all wiped out in one fell swoop.

Help/Support:

It is not yet clear what kind of support will be offered. At the larger amounts of storage, it would be easy to assume that Google will have a specialized cloud tech department with several levels of support pricing.
